Reception use the simultaneous oral spelling format daily to teach sight words from the Reception sight word list. For homework, children are provided with a list of sight words at the beginning of the academic year in their homework journals. Children are encouraged to practise these words regularly at home.
KS1 also use the simultaneous oral spelling format for spellings. Mnemonics are used to teach common exception words from the year 2 spelling list. Spelling is sent home weekly and tested within school. These are linked to the phonics sound or spelling pattern they are learning that week.
In Key Stage 2, we follow the no-nonsense spelling programme in class. The focus of the programme is on the teaching of spelling which includes the knowledge of spelling patterns and rules and to help promote the learning of spellings. Guidance, rather than prescription, is provided so children can apply these skills when looking at a range of different words.
